Flat Surface Tire Dynamics

Smithers' flat surface tire dynamics machine provides low speed and static measurements on tires and wheels in a laboratory environment. Tires ranging in size from small aircraft and passenger car to medium and wide-base truck can be tested at loads of up to 10,000 lb. (45 k-N). Load, slip angle, and speed can all be precisely controlled.

Flat Surface Tire Dynamics Machine (FSTDM)

  • Truck tire force and moment
  • Passenger and truck tire footprint mechanics
  • Footprint stresses
  • Footprint motion
  • Footprint energy
  • Tire static vertical, lateral, and longitudinal stiffnesses
  • Tire relaxation length
  • Low speed glass plate visualization
  • Low speed truck tire uniformity

Many additional experimental mechanics tests are possible

  • Unusual road surfaces: cleats, surface discontinuities, grooved road
  • Special mounting for virtually any size tire from chair-caster size up to 425 mm in width and 47" in diameter
  • Tests on instrumented wheels and tires
  • Rim stress studies
  • Tire cord stress studies
  • Pavement damage studies
  • Swiveling casters
  • Parking forces

Available data includes:

  • Stresses and motions in the tire footprint
  • Tire forces and moments
  • Glass plate visualization
  • Lateral, longitudinal, and vertical spring rates
  • Customized tests, including force development versus distance rolled, bead/rim interface pressures, etc.
